Uniform policy

Elevate Ballet and Stage School has a strict uniform policy and expect that dances are well groomed and presented for every dance class.

Whilst appropriate grooming in our classes ensures we look presentable it goes far beyond the aesthetics. Proper grooming is essential for safety, discipline, focus and technical development.

Ensuring our dancers wear the appropriate attire and has neatly groomed and secure hair, means that their teacher can see their physical form, posture and lines. This is essential to correct their alignment, placement and ensure that they receive the best technical training. Coming appropriately dressed and groomed contributed to the dancers over all progression and supports injury prevention.

Some reasons we are passionate and therefore firm with our uniform policy

Practical and safety reasons

  • Clear visibility- a neat uniform and secure hair, in a neat bun, allows the teacher to see the dancers lines, alignment and placement. Ensuring essential correction is given and reducing injury.

  • Reduces distraction- hair flicking into the face or having to constantly adjust clothing is distracting for both the individual, their peers and teacher. It is disruptive to the class and impacts on everyone’s learning and development. When clothing and hair are appropriate then attention is fully on the dancing.

  • Injury prevention

    • lose clothing or improper footwear can lead to slipping, trips, strains

    • Jewellery other can be caught on clothing and hair. It can injure partners in certain movements or cause a hazardous environment if dropped on the floor

Lose hair, ponytails or braids can also be a hazard by potentially whipping/hitting others

  • Discipline and professionalism- The routine of grooming and putting on a uniform helps the dancer to mentally prepare for their class. Uniform sets a professional appearance and tone and fosters a sense of unity and equality amongst our dancers,

  • Respect for the art form and tradition- Ballet has a rich history and tradition. Following Classical grooming standards is a way to respect its heritage.

Our Policy

  • All Students must be in the appropriate attire for their class. Hair must be in a neat bun with no loose hair. Please pin hair and do not come to class with head bands.

  • It students arrive to class with their hair secured in an appropriate bun they will be asked to secure their hair before they can take part in their class. This is ensure the safety of the individual and their peers. Pony tails, braids or Plaits will not be accepted.

  • Accepted uniform

    • Ballet- Elevate Ballet and Stage school Leotard in the appropriate colour for their age group. Pink Convertible ballet tights or pink ballet socks. Canvas Ballet shoes. All inter age and over require pink ribbon and elastics secured to their ballet shoes.

    • Jazz/Commercial- Ballet uniform is acceptable or any combination from the schools official Jazz uniform. Bare feet or half turners

    • Stretch/conditioning- Ballet uniform is acceptable or any combination of the schools official Jazz inform. Bare feet.

    • Seniors only may be permitted to wear their hair in a well groomed pony tail for Jazz and Commercial. Seniors will require a pair of dance heels/boots for Jazz.

    • Warm up clothing- Studios can be cold, particularly in the winter. When muscles are cold then injury can occur. We encourage dancers to wear warm up clothing to start their class. However, they will be expected to remove them after the warm up. Please ensure any warm up clothes eg leg warmers, dance wraps, warm up boots are plain black

    • pointe shoes- Miss Rebekah will assess girls and advise when they are ready for Pointe work. As a general rule this is around 11 years old. However, may be younger for very strong girls or much older for others. Pointe shoes must be fitted by and bought from a qualified pointe shoe fitter. Some schools are specific about the certain bands their student must have, we are not. It can be a long and scientific process to find the correct shoe for your foot. Miss Rebekah is therefore happy with any brand as long as they fit correctly. Please be aware that whilst a shoe may appear to fit during your fitting it may not once you begin to dance. This is not the fault of your fitter as they were unable to see you dance. However, if your shoe does not fit in the studio you will be unable to take class. This decision will be solely Miss Rebekahs and not negotiable. All Pointe shoes must have both ribbons and elastics and be sewn correctly. This is solely for safety and welfare of the dancer.

  • No Jewellery is permitted in any class

  • New starters can wear their own clothing for a taster class but please ensure these are well fitted with bare feet. When they have enrolled in a class then they will be expected to purchase the required uniform.

if there are any questions about correct uniform or how to do a ballet bun correctly Miss Rebekah is always happy to help.
